Livingston (Trenton Security #1)

Livingston by J.M. Dabney: Review by Lost in a Book for @BMBR

Synopsis:

He was the Beast without the escape clause.

Francis “Liv” Livingston was a beast. No matter if he wore a perfectly tailored suit or if he was in his tactical gear, people avoided looking at him. He was always first to volunteer for the jobs only a person with a death wish wanted. Tomorrows weren’t guaranteed. His boss had come to him and told him he needed him for a job. Linus knew the jobs he liked, but when he opened the file, it all went to hell.

Beauty was only skin deep.

Fielding Haskell made his way in the world on his looks. He’d earned his first film role before he could read a script. He didn’t want the fame. He wanted to go to college. He wanted a man who didn’t look at him and see how pretty he was. Unfortunately, a so-called fan only cared how attractive he was, and it earned him a personal bodyguard and a vacation. He looked forward to the break until he met the man in charge of his safety and wondered if the danger he left was worth dealing with a sudden attraction to a man who was colder than ice.

I’m going to start this off with some warnings and information that I wish I had prior to diving in. This read is full of Daddy kink. The MCs and secondary characters are all part of the lifestyle and it’s a huge element of the story. There’s also a fisting scene that isn’t super graphic but worth noting. There are triggers for abuse, stalking, and mentions of prior suicide attempts.

Still here?

anyonethere.gif

Daddy kink and fisting aren’t my kinks of choice but I still somewhat enjoyed this read. Both Fielding and Livingston were very likable with heartbreaking backstories that had me cheering for them along the way.

Livingston was born into an environment where “love came in shades of blue and black, fading to a deceptively pretty purple and a sick greenish-yellow.” After a horrific childhood ripe with abuse and time in the military, he works for a security company. Livingston lives his life waiting, hoping for it to end. He’s scarred from head to toe on half his body and accepts that he’ll never find someone that will look past his beastly exterior.

Fielding is a 23 year old actor that has never truly lived. He’s beautiful and on a very short leash with zero freedom. Fielding is starved, denied relationships, micromanaged, and has a keeper 24/7. No chocolate for two years? *gasp* #fuckthatnoise! He also has a very aggressive stalker which is how he’s placed in the care of Livingston, his new bodyguard.

Both men are broken and hesitant to reach for more. They are immediately attracted to each other but Livingston has a difficult time getting past his hangups and the 15 year age gap to move on. Things obviously heat up for the men and Livingston gets his boy while trying to suss out a stalker. They have a few bumps in the road while Livingston tries to do what’s right. Eventually they get their Daddy/boy situation resolved for a predictable HEA.

Here are my issues: I felt like I was entering a story that had already started.  There was a lack of depth and shortfalls in character and plot development. Many things are rushed, especially the Daddy/boy dynamic without being fully realized. I *think* it’s due to the fact that the secondary characters already had their stories told. However, this is supposed to be a standalone and the first of a new series. A little warning about reading order would go a long way for clarity. I didn’t read the other books by this author and therefore can’t speak on whether it would have provided the foundational depth that Livingston is lacking.

As I mentioned above, I was still able to find pieces to enjoy. The stalker storyline held my attention and I was invested in the outcome of Livingston and Fielding. This story isn’t for the squeamish but I’d recommend it to those that have already read the previous books about the secondary characters.

On His Knees

On His Knees by Laura Kaye: Review by Cupcake

Getting on his knees makes him question everything…and want even more…

Another failed relationship has lawyer Jamie Fielding confronting the truth—he’ll never be satisfied with any woman until he admits what he needs…to submit and to be used—hard. When a friend invites him to the exclusive Blasphemy club, Jamie is stunned to find everything he ever wanted—in the fierce, ruthless hands of a man.

Psychiatrist Alex McGarry will play with anyone who craves his rough brand of domination, but what he really wants is to settle down. Which makes the submissive male he meets at his club a bad idea—the man might be hot as hell but he’s also new to everything Alex has to offer. Except that doesn’t keep them from coming together again and again, sating every one of their darkest desires.

Master Alex sets Jamie’s whole world on fire and makes him question everything—and that’s good. Because Alex won’t tolerate hiding what they have for long and he wants much more than just having Jamie on his knees…

Wellllll this sucks.

I had high hopes going in since I’d read (and really liked) Kaye before plus kink! It’s glitterkink though which I should’ve picked up on from the blurb. My bad. Glitterkink is not my jam. The protocols and honorifics were tolerable and it wasn’t overly BDSM 101 but still… glitterkink. I like the subversiveness of the club being a former church, though. That made me titter. Blasphemy indeed.

There is one force play scene that was bad wrong in the best possible way. Many things are cursorily tried and/or mentioned kink-wise-D/s, spanking, CBT, face fucking and breath play, lite bondage and humiliation, forced orgasms with mentions of orgasm denial, electroplay and impact play-but none was very inspired or intense. There was nowhere near as much PAIN as I was hoping for from a book purportedly focused on SM.

The plot is straightforward new masochist and sub meets experienced sadist and dom who is 10 yrs his senior, their kinks align and they speed race to HEAsville. Like they were on an egg timer. Fans of instalove will be delighted by this story. I found it predictable, employing a standard romance algorithm.

It’s rushed which stymied my connection to both of these characters despite having access to both of their perspectives. BOOM! Jaime realizes he’s bisexual. His tattoo artist offhandedly calls him a masochist and offers to set him up with a friend who’s part owner of Blasphemy and BOOM! Jaime’s a card carrying masochist. Master Alex shows him around on his inaugural visit and BOOM! he’s ready for him to pound his virgin ass into submission. Then BOOM! Jaime’s taking a fat cock like champ in every orifice and even some monster dildos too.

You don’t want to maybe… take a breath first? I do. I need a minute. Fast forwarding through all those major life changing events not only felt unrealistic, but I felt like I was missing all the good stuff. Like development of… everything.

On His Knees is BDSM fantasy. Those who like their kink to be realistic are not going to like this. It’s a quick read that’s low on angst and can be read as a standalone with storytelling reminiscent of Cherise Sinclair, so if you’re a fan of hers you’ll probably like this.

Some positives are they have some sweet moments, I liked how tactile they were and they have chemistry, so I was leaning towards 3 stars until the conflict which was hellafuck juvenile and stupid. I can deal with some piss poor communication but this was NEXT LEVEL ridiculous, especially given that open communication is a pillar of BDSM.

Sadly, this was not super successful for me but I think the cat’s out of the bag that I’m a picky bitch. There are already a multitude of glowing reviews for it so feel free to ignore me.

Recommend to fans of glitterkink, instalove and Cherise Sinclair.

Excerpt:

Jamie turned, and his gut fell. Because Master Alex was nowhere—

There. At the bar. Looking straight at Jamie like he wanted to make a meal out of him.

“Fuck,” Jamie whispered to himself. And then he forced his feet to move. He wasn’t sure what he was walking into, but the dark, hot possibility of it made him a little lightheaded. And then he was standing in front of the Dom, heart racing, blood heating, mouth dry. He wasn’t sure what to do or say, so he dropped his gaze and waited. There was almost a satisfaction in being able to do that, in being able to hand off that control to someone else.

Master Alex stepped right into his personal space, holding himself just separate from bringing them body to body, and then he gently cupped him by the neck and brought his mouth to Jamie’s ear. “I fucked up. And I would like a chance to talk to you. About playing. If you’re willing to give it to me.”

An exhilarated sweat bloomed over Jamie’s whole body and made him suddenly sure he’d give this man almost anything for the reactions he seemed able to wring out of him. With just a touch or a whisper.

But Jamie didn’t want to be jerked around, either. Not when this place felt like it could open a door for which he’d maybe been looking forever, and not when his guaranteed time here was so limited. And so Jamie mustered some big brass balls, lifted his gaze, and met the other man’s eyes. “I’m new at all this, Sir. But I’m not new at dating or relationships, or hooking up, for that matter. So, are you sure? Because I’ve kinda had enough of screwing up relationships, and I’m looking for…something here. So if you’re not sure, I’d—”

“I’m fucking sure.” Master Alex’s dark gaze blazed.

Jamie nodded, trying to play it cool even though the rasp of the other man’s voice was doing bad, bad things to him, especially as close as they still stood. “Okay.”

“Okay.” The Dom’s grip tightened on Jamie’s neck. “So is that a yes?”

“Yes, Si—”

Master Alex kissed him. His mouth hard but his tongue soft where it surged inside Jamie’s mouth. Jesus, the man tasted like sin and sex, like he could ruin him and put him back together again. It was a kiss that might’ve taken Jamie to his knees. A kiss he’d never forget.

Jamie groaned at the goodness of it, at the unexpectedness of it, at how fucking amazing it felt to be kissed and held and handled firmly, maybe even a little roughly. At being the recipient of aggressiveness instead of the instigator. His cock was as hard as it’d ever been in his whole life, from a single kiss.

The Dom’s grip on him tightened, and he finally hauled their bodies close, allowing Jamie to feel that Master Alex was aroused, too. Jamie’s heart tripped into a sprint as he gave into the kiss. It might’ve lasted for seconds or minutes, but all Jamie knew for sure was that it ended way too soon.

Master Alex pulled away. “That doubt you were feeling, that’s on me. I’m sorry. I should’ve spoken with more care earlier. But I am sure, Jamie.”

Did the man think Jamie was capable of speech after that kiss? The world was still fucking spinning around him. “I’m sure, too, Sir,” he managed, though his words came out as barely more than a breath.

A single nod. “Then come with me. Somewhere private.”

Bland

I’ve heard so many fantastic things about this author’s work that when this popped up on NetGalley I pounced. It’s not that this story is bad per se, it just wasn’t enough for me. Not enough kink. Not enough feels. Not enough zest. Not enough zhooshing.

The blurb does a good job of recapping the plot so I won’t go there. It’s a decent interpretation of fantasy rescue wish fulfillment. A little contrived, yes, but I can see the appeal.

Mariela was strike one for me. She is a dance instructor at the RACK (cute, huh?) Academy which is run by Lennox. Her crush on him predates his relationship with Winnie and they are friends, but her attitude toward him rubbed me the wrong way. I think she’s supposed to be portrayed as a sub with a spine but she comes across as a vitriolic anger ball. She antagonizes Lennox at every turn and I could muster up little to no sympathy for her cause. I get that she wants to be his submissive but her openly hostile/bratty behavior was very off-putting.

Strike number two is Lennox who’s prone to the ole martyr syndrome. Everything’s his fault, his responsibility.

Neither one of them are fully fleshed out instead relying on constructing both of their identities as “dominant” and “submissive”. I have issues with one’s entire personality construct being comprised of one thing, in this case their sexual proclivities. Even in real life if all anyone ever talks about is this one microcosm of their world they tend to come across one-dimensional and boring. At least to me they do.

The remainder of my issues are nitpicky:

1. it’s sugarkink and as hot as spanking can be, this was halfhearted at best. There’s no depth to the kink. It’s all labels, calisthenics positions and mediocre sex (dirty talk, anal, face-fucking, spanking, non-restraint bondage, mild orgasm denial).

2. Mariela gets into a fairly serious car accident and allegedly crushes her leg yet a few weeks later she’s at a BDSM club sceneing and only wears an ankle wrap?

It does have a nice HEA that is romantic and will be appealing to some. It probably would’ve been moreso for me had I liked either of the characters.

Unfortunately, I didn’t love it but sugarkink fans will probably enjoy it more than I.

I just…

umm.gif

How does one describe the visuals that were provided in detail and will forever be burned in my brain? I mean, seriously… a Count vampire that drinks jizz instead of blood? Shadow tentacles that fuck unsuspecting quests? A gigantic penis that waddles on its testicles? That’s just a tiny sampling of the “frantic naughtiness” we are treated to in the Tales of Monstererotica series.

If you’re looking for a well developed romance with fully fleshed characters, MC growth, and an answer to life’s many questions, you’re in the wrong place. But, if you can suspend reality and hop on board the WTF-monster-porn-train for a warped, OTT reading experience, this may be your cuppa.

Book 1: The Castle of Count Shagula
Jonathan Woodcock is on a business trip to Transylvania when he meets Count Shagula and the many “servants” that live in his castle. He realizes very quickly that not all is as it appears and must find a way to escape the cum-thirsty Count who has a “wang” obsession. An escape plot doesn’t come to fruition until Jonathan is fully *ahem* serviced by a plethora of holes, appendages, tentacles, etc. Jonathan is overcome by lust while still equally determined to find an escape. He gets creative in his fleeing methods and goes out with a bang.

Book 2: The Madness of Dr. Wankenstein
Poor, poor Jonathan Woodcock. He’s trying so hard to recover from his time with Count Shagula and make his way closer to home in England. Unfortunately he needs money and takes an assistant position with the mad Doctor Wankenstein. Dr. W is on a never ending quest to develop the next large huge gigantic pleasure inducing appendage and will stop at nothing to get it. Once again, Jonathan has to figure out how to escape while still taking one for the team… errr, the giving and receiving team, that is.

Both books served their purpose of being crazed AND comedic. I enjoyed the first book slightly more than the second which had to do with the creativity of the endings. There aren’t any characters to fall in love with but these are short little reads that had me scratching my head, squirming as I processed the detailed descriptions, and wondering what Jonathan was going to experience next.

This series is absolutely ridiculous, disturbing, and driven by an obsession of lust and giant wangs. It’s also creative in its debauchery and I enjoyed this crazy ass escape from reality. Recommended.

Oh yeah…

That loud popping noise you heard was my monster porn cherry being obliterated by tentacles, waddling penes, and jizz nourished vampires that can suck better than my Dyson.
